Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are a procedure involving the application of a chemical solution to the skin, resulting in exfoliation and peeling. Different chemical peels can be used to target specific cosmetic concerns. There are superficial, medium, and deep peels, which penetrate the skin to different depths, resulting in different desired effects.
Superficial chemical peels, such as Alpha-Hydroxyacid (AHA) and Beta-Hydroxyacid (BHA) peels, target the top layers of skin only. These are used to treat superficial processes, such as acne, hyperpigmentation, sunspots, and unwanted texture.
Medium depth chemical peels, such as trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels or the VI Peel, target the top and middle layers of skin, penetrating deeper than the superficial peels. These are used to target all of the above, as well as deeper processes like fine lines and scars.
The procedure is quick and relatively painless. It involves cleansing the skin, followed by application of the chemical solution, and then in some cases neutralization of that solution. After the procedure, you can leave the office and return to your daily activities. Downtime after a chemical peel varies based on the type of peel, but generally speaking there will be immediate redness of the skin, followed by a few days of peeling.
Different chemical peels serve different roles and not all peels are safe for all skin types. Chemical peels can be done alone or in combination with other cosmetic treatments offered by our practice.
