PRP

Harness the healing power of your own blood with PRP therapy. This treatment uses platelet-rich plasma from your blood to promote skin rejuvenation, improve healing, and stimulate hair growth.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a treatment that can be used in many medical areas, including cosmetic dermatology. PRP refers to use of the platelet-rich portion of a patient’s blood, which is filled with growth factors. When these growth factors are used on the skin, they stimulate cell regeneration and collagen production for skin and hair rejuvenation.

The process of PRP treatment involves drawing a small amount of blood from the patient. After the blood is drawn, the tubes are placed in a centrifuge and spun down so that the platelet-rich portion of the blood can be separated. Once this portion is separated, it is applied back into the skin.

PRP can be used for:

  • Hair loss
  • Improving skin texture
  • Improving fine lines and wrinkles
  • Overall skin rejuvenation

For hair loss, PRP is injected into the scalp using small syringes. The bulb of the hair follicle, where hair stem cells are located, is deep within the skin. The use of individual injections of PRP helps to deposit the growth factors near the portion of the hair follicle where the most growth is taking place.

For facial skin rejuvenation, PRP can be combined with microneedling. This has been referred to as a “vampire facial”. Microneedling creates small channels in the skin with the use of tiny needles. Once these channels are formed, PRP can be applied so that it is absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin. This creates enhanced collagen production over time, leading to improvements in skin tone, texture, and fine lines.

Since PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood it is a very safe procedure with minimal side effects. These can include minimal pain, swelling, or bruising. The main consideration for patients undergoing treatment with PRP is pain associated with the initial blood draw, or with the injection or microneedling of the PRP back into the skin. It is also possible to have a mild headache after scalp injections. Overall, the procedure is well tolerated and has no downtime.

For both hair restoration and skin rejuvenation, we recommend a series of at least 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Results are best seen over several weeks to months after the last treatment.
